Cowichan Conversations: CVRD Director Gerry Giles Has Endorsed A Cell Phone Tower For Cobble Hill!

Posted February 19th, 2013 by Richard Hughes

Richard Hughes-Political Blogger

The other day I wrote a piece about cell phone reception, dead spots, and the controversy that can swirl around these things.

I later learned that Director Giles had come out swinging at a ‘Electoral Area Services Meeting’ as she had done some time back, against such a proposal citing health risks and the unpleasant aesthetics of the towers.

Soon shoppers will be able to call home on their cell phones from Country Grocer!

Well that was then but surprise, surprise a change of heart and an endorsement for a smaller tower to be installed behind Rona’s Hardware . Yeah!

Just a minute, what happened, what changed? I mean a complete reversal, a new beginning, a new found flexibility perhaps.

Now the very modern and up to date CVRD has set up a video service so that you can watch your elected representatives in . . . → Read More: Cowichan Conversations: CVRD Director Gerry Giles Has Endorsed A Cell Phone Tower For Cobble Hill!

Who farted? #nlpoli

Posted February 19th, 2013 by Edward Hollett

Finance minister Jerome Kennedy took his budget “consultation” roadshow to Corner Brook the other day.  Former finance minister Tom Marshall showed up to help.  Tom has run more than a few of these farces so he could lend a hand if things got tough.

Well, all that was one thing.

The other thing is the way the video freezes in the online CBC story on the “consultation” in Corner Brook.

who farted2Tom and Jerry look like they are desperately trying to avoid something unpleasant.  Maybe they got used to doing this during an awkward moment in cabinet when someone passed gas or went on some tirade about Randy Simms or “Quebec”. Tom looks up at the ceiling and looks thoughtful.  Jerry looks at something on his desk and tries to look equally thoughtful.

And then when the awkward moment passed, they could get back to business.

Then for a third thing, you have to understand that advertising shows up on websites based on a program that ties the ad to a key word associated with the story. They might also vary it by geography but in this case there’s an obvious connection between the story and this ad that popped up right next to Tom Marshall.

who farted3

There’s a picture of some geezer who looks like he hasn’t had a good fart in a few years explaining how he wrote off his credit card debt.  “Click here to find out” reads the copy.

Maybe Tom is wondering if he should just give in and click the ad.

What’s to lose?  We couldn’t be in any worse shape than Tom got us into already when he was finance minister.

You cannot make any of this stuff up.

Cowichan Conversations: We Need More Cell Phone Towers in South Cowichan, Or Do We ?

Posted February 18th, 2013 by Richard Hughes

Richard Hughes-Political Commentator

How many times have you tried to retreive a call while at Cobble Hill’s Valley View Shopping Centre and had it drop off? Other times the calls do not connect at all! The annoyance in being able to remind your mate to pickup a carton of milk which you forgot to put on the list is frustrating. If the reception was better you could just caall or text them but alas the signal will not get through.

I noticed a We’ve got ‘Wi-Fi’ sticker on the door at Country Grocers the other day but did not try out as I was buying up some Valentine Day flowers and was too consumed with that task to remember to try it out. Has anyone out there tried it?

If it does work you would still run out of reception when you headed over to the Peoples Drug . . . → Read More: Cowichan Conversations: We Need More Cell Phone Towers in South Cowichan, Or Do We ?

Last week I watched “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” [9/10] which is a must-see movie, not only if you love it when alien bugs invade brains. I won’t spoil the ending, but someone important dies. I saw the end of “Death Race” [3/10] and I’m glad I didn’t see the beginning. == Time [...]

Bones of Kings

The discovery of Richard III’s grave is pretty awesome. Bonus, he was still inside it! It’s really hard to get the motivation to leave a grave though, it doesn’t happen very often anyway, and is entirely with assistance. And here’s another thing entirely:

Holy Sit

Posted February 12th, 2013 by John Klein

Kids were getting chemical burns from a toilet seat (and probably desk, for a boy with burned elbows) at an Ottawa area school. Most likely the disinfectant was sprayed on but never properly wiped off and rinsed. One of my concerns with using publish washrooms that have just been cleaned, is chemical splash-back or toxic [...]
