Ontario Superior Court Throws Out Etobicoke Centre Election Results

Posted May 18th, 2012 by Hamutal Dotan

In the last federal election the incumbent, Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Liberal) lost to Conservative challenger Ted Opitz by 26 votes. A judge today declared that election invalid.

If this case can be summarized, in a single observation, it would be that it cannot be enough to accept that individuals who voted were qualified to do so by registration, in the absence of registration certificates, in the absence of the poll books recording anyone who registered by vouching and in the absence of [...]

Saturday Morning Confusion about the ‘End of the World!’

Posted May 12th, 2012 by Allan W Janssen

Well kids, here is another example of a left wing nut blowing things out of all proportion just to make a point. Yes, there are some environmental concerns with using ‘tar sands’ oil, but it hardly means the end of the world, folks. A guy with a job as a NASA scientist should know better [...]

One year into Harper’s majority and no media culpa in sight

Posted May 2nd, 2012 by derrick

Not that I really expected anything better, but I was nonetheless floored by today’s editorial in the Globe and Mail on the anniversary of Harper’s majority election (‘Harper government has had a good first year’).
Given the growing evidence of widespr…

Saturday Morning Confusion. How can the Conservatives and NDP be tied in popularity?

Posted April 28th, 2012 by Allan W Janssen

Dear Readers; This morning’s news has got me so confused that I am actually dizzy. Somehow I feel just like I did that morning so many years ago when I found out that the NDP had won the election here in Ontario. Sick! ———————————————- NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, left, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper are [...]

Orwellian times for Canada

Federal Budget Cuts Force CBC to Slash Services

Posted April 4th, 2012 by Steve Kupferman

650 job losses, scaled back international service, ads on Radio 2 among measures to cope with federal budget cut.

A comment on the NDP leadership process

Posted March 26th, 2012 by Jim Quail

At a dinner-party a while ago, I drew some sharp disagreement by commenting that one-member-one-vote is a crappy way to select a party leader. While it has the outward form of more intense democracy, it sterilizes the democratic process.
Selecting a…

I won’t say ‘I told you so’ but robocalls came from a LIBERAL!

Posted March 24th, 2012 by Allan W Janssen

Dear Readers; Just a few short days ago your much maligned reporter suggested that the Robocall scandal was a nefarious plot by the Liberals to discredit the Tories, since they didn’t have much else to do….. and didn’t have much else to do it with! Well, rather than gloat, or say “I told you so,” [...]

Scott will serve as MP in the seat held by Jack Layton until his death last year.

Scott on the campaign trail last month.

As expected by most observers, NDP candidate Craig Scott has won the riding of Toronto-Danforth in a by-election held today. Scott will succeed the late Jack Layton, who served as MP for the riding from 2004–2011. With 110 out of 196 polls reporting so far, Scott has garnered 59 per cent of the vote. Liberal [...]

Meet a Toronto-Danforth Candidate: Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu

The Toronto-Danforth by-election to replace Jack Layton happens on March 19. Here, Torontoist aims to tell you who’s running, and why. If the NDP, the Liberals, or the Tories win the by-election in Toronto-Danforth, Parliament will get another back bencher and the balance of power won’t shift one iota. But if the Greens win, they’ll [...]

The People vs. Stephen Harper: Time’s Up

Posted March 13th, 2012 by Todd Aalgaard

A government with no moral authority, a democracy in the balance, and a brewing struggle between the state and its people: Canada in 2012.

robocalls_03122012_3

Two summers ago, a lot of things we said about this government—then a minority—centered around its perceived slide towards authoritarianism. By July 2010, the Harper Conservatives had suspended parliament twice, both times out of naked self-interest, suggesting that the canary in the coal mine of Canada’s democracy was clinging with one claw to life. This [...]
