Metro: When it comes to history, what’s worth saving?

Posted May 11th, 2012 by mike

Click here to read my Metro column about a dangerous habit that seems to be taking over Calgary.  It’s rare for a city to tear down the old, to replace with the new, I find especially in Canada.  Yet, every month, more and more beautifully old buildings seem to be coming down and more and [...]

Miss America to the Calgary Stampede

Posted May 9th, 2012 by Jes

Heard that the current Miss America, Laura Kaeppeler, will be in Calgary at the start of the Stampede! The 100th anniversary is going to be bringing all sorts of people to our city, so this shouldn’t be surprising, but I am not exactly sure what she is…

A Tory Here, A Tory There.

Posted May 9th, 2012 by Robert McBean

The new Cabinet appointed today by Premier Redford is both a continuation of the status quo, but also contains a few hints about what to expect. If you view this as change, you need to get out more.

The 17 member cabinet has 7 associate ministers. Salary and size of cabinet are red herrings. The real issue is whether they can function well.  Previous cabinets were plagued by turf wars, empire

Terahertz: No, I don’t

Posted May 8th, 2012 by Ian

Look at this photo. What do  you see? I see the moon, some clouds, a tree, and an over-exposed light post in the foreground. The Calgary Herald wants to know if you’re as pareidolia-susceptible as their reader L. Wolanski and see Jesus in the c…

Morton, Hinman and Some Bickering

Posted April 27th, 2012 by Robert McBean

The last pre-election message on Ted Morton’s website:

To our Supporters:

Thank you for supporting me and the PC Party—a party that has madeAlbertathe best place to work, to live and to raise a family. As your MLA for Chestermere-Rocky View, I will work for you to keep it that way.

I wasn’t really sure if that was a premature victory speech or an awkwardly worded appeal to get out the vote

Calgary Folk Music Fest Line Up is HOT!

Posted April 25th, 2012 by mike

Like, seriously. Hot.   The 34th annual Calgary Folk Music Festival announced their up this year and it would appear that there is something for everyone…unless you like Sinead O’Connor, who was to be a headliner, but canceled her entire tour two days ago. No replacement for her has been announced…yet, so stay tuned! As [...]

ABVOTE: Play the Obama Card.

Posted April 22nd, 2012 by Robert McBean

Donna Kennedy-Glans, election flyer 2012

This was in my mailbox on Friday. Donna Kennedy-Glans is running as the PC candidate in my riding of Calgary Varsity. It’s quite impressive, the production values are great.  It looks like it cost a lot. Not surprising from a governing party that spares no penny on self-promotion.  Interesting, no mention of the PC Party until the very bottom of the

ABVOTE: Hell No

Posted April 20th, 2012 by Robert McBean

Warren Kinsella says here and here that Progressives should vote for Alison Redford’s Progressive Conservative Party in Alberta’s Provincial election. It is a formulaic and emotional appeal to strategic voting. It presents no argument that such a vote would accomplish anything useful.  The strategic voting argument is always stated as an urgent imperative, and is insulting to our intelligence. (

Calgary’s Alt. Rock Festival, X Fest, Announces Line-Up

Posted April 16th, 2012 by Jes

Calgary’s “No Nickleback Guaranteed” radio station, X 92.9, hosted the first ever X Fest last year. I wasn’t thrilled at the line up as I am not much of a ‘rocker’ (well, all except Weezer…they’re legit). So this year I was expecting more of the same…
